Both Work. They Do Not

Work For The Same Student

We have no preference and charge the same for either. What follows is what we have actually observed across several thousand sessions.

In-Person Sessions

Online Sessions

Attention

Harder to drift. A tutor sitting beside a student notices a lost expression instantly.

Attention

Needs a quiet room and a closed door. Works well for self-motivated students, less well for easily distracted ones.

Younger students

Usually the better choice up to about age eleven, where physical materials and presence matter.

Younger students

Possible with a parent nearby, but rarely the first recommendation for primary age.

Scheduling

Fixed to travel time. A cancelled session is harder to move at short notice.

Scheduling

Far more flexible. Evening and early-morning slots are genuinely available.

Written work

Marked on paper in front of the student, which suits essays and long-form working.

Written work

Shared whiteboard and screen annotation, which suits maths and diagram-heavy subjects surprisingly well.

Recording

Not recorded. Notes are written up afterwards.

Recording

Sessions can be recorded on request, which helps for revision and for parents who want to follow along.

Cost of travel

Travel time is yours or ours, depending on where the session happens.

Cost of travel

None, which for families outside the city is often the deciding factor.

Choosing

A Short Guide To Deciding

Without Overthinking It

Choose In-Person If

The student is under eleven, is easily distracted, needs physical materials, or has said plainly that they find video calls awkward.

Choose Online If

The student is thirteen or older, is reasonably self-directed, has a quiet space at home, or you live far enough away that travel would eat the session.

Mix Both If

You want the first few sessions in person to establish the relationship, then move online for convenience once it is working.

Change Your Mind Freely

Format is not locked in. Families switch mid-term regularly and it costs nothing to do so.

Practical

What You Need For An

Online Session To Work

A Laptop Or Tablet

A phone screen is too small for shared working. A laptop is ideal; a tablet with a stylus is excellent for maths.

A Quiet Room

With the door shut. This matters more than the equipment and is the single most common reason an online session underperforms.

A Stable Connection

Nothing exotic. If video calls work in your house, tutoring will work.

Paper And A Pen

Students still work things out by hand. The screen is for sharing, not for replacing the working out.
